Fifth Word from the Cross – I thirst …

Psalm 69:18-21 NLT
Come and redeem me; free me from my enemies.
You know of my shame, scorn, and disgrace.
You see all that my enemies are doing.
Their insults have broken my heart,
   and I am in despair.
If only one person would show some pity;
   if only one would turn and comfort me.
But instead, they give me poison for food;
   they offer me sour wine for my thirst.

James Tissot –  I thirst

John 19:28-29 NLT
Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfil Scripture he said, I am thirsty.
A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it,
   put it on a hyssop branch, and held it up to his lips.

Hyssop was a herb known for its medicinal qualities
and wine for its relief of thirst and celebration of life

Jesus, thank you for your death on the cross – fulfilling scripture.
Our insults and sins break your heart but yet you bring healing and relief for our deepest needs.
Your resurrection gives life and joy to all those who accept the wonderful gift of your mission.
THANK YOU!  Amen.
