Dear Friends
After a long hot, bright summer, Autumn has definitely arrived with temperatures being lower than
the average for the first time in a long time! With Autumn there comes a quiet invitation to pay
attention – it offers a rich spirituality shaped by gratitude, reflection, and trust.
A Season of Letting Go The falling leaves are perhaps autumn’s most familiar symbol. Trees release
what they no longer need, not in despair but in preparation for new life. There is a quiet wisdom
here for us. Autumn encourages us to notice what we might need to let go of—old habits, burdens,
or ways of thinking that no longer help us grow. In the rhythm of creation, letting go is not a loss but
a step toward renewal.
A Time of Gathering and Gratitude Autumn is also the season of harvest. Fields are
gathered in, apples ripen, and the earth offers its abundance. In church life, this is reflected
in our Harvest celebrations, where we give thanks for God’s provision and remember our
responsibility to share generously. Gratitude is at the heart of autumn spirituality:
recognising that all we have is gift, and that thanksgiving shapes us into people of
compassion.
Light in the Growing Darkness As the days shorten, we become more aware of darkness.
Yet the Christian story teaches us that God meets us there. Autumn’s dimming light
prepares us for Advent’s candles, reminding us that hope often begins quietly. The season
encourages us to trust God in the slower, shadowed places of life, knowing that light will
return.
Beauty in Change Perhaps most of all, autumn shows us that change can be beautiful. The
colours of the season—gold, russet, deep red—are a reminder that transformation is part of
God’s design. In our own lives, change can be unsettling, but autumn reassures us that God
is present in every season, shaping us gently and faithfully.
As we move through autumn, may we find space to reflect, to give thanks, and to trust in
the God who brings renewal through every turning of the year.
Yours in Christ
Simon
