Matthew 5:3-10 NLT
God blesses those who are poor and realise their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.
God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied.
God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
God blesses those whose hearts are pure, for they will see God.
God blesses those who work for peace, for they will be called the children of God.
God blesses those who are persecuted for doing right, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
To bless something or one is to recognise and acknowledge its true value.
Once blessed by God we can never be unblessed – God does not change his mind.
Once we are saved by Christ, we are always saved.
To have God as our king is to be blessed.
To have God as our king is to be guarded, guided and governed by love itself.
To have God as our king is to be loved.
If we are blessed so that we might be a blessing, so we are loved that we in turn might love.
God’s redeeming action in the gospel is a word of blessing that enriches all that hear it
and causes them to speak it afresh.
The cross and resurrection of Christ is like a pebble thrown in the middle of a still pond,
God’s blessing of love and mercy ripples outwards by the overflowing of the Holy Spirit
in our lives, our actions and our words.
