Jesus dies on the cross
Jesus’s death in Matthew and Mark is recorded as the picture of complete abandonment.
He has been betrayed by Judas, denied by Peter and his disciples have run away.
Now it seems he has been abandoned by God who he calls Eloi, not Abba.
By contrast in John and Luke his death is recorded as the completion of his mission.
In these different accounts of his death, we can know that Jesus shares our desolation
when God seems absent but …
his death triumphs over abandonment and pain, tearing the barrier between us and God.

Mark 15:33-34 NLT
At noon, darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.
Then at three o’clock Jesus called out with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?
which means My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?
John 19:28-30 NLT
Jesus knew that his mission was now finished, and to fulfil Scripture he said, I am thirsty.
A jar of sour wine was sitting there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put it on a hyssop branch,
and held it up to his lips. When Jesus had tasted it, he said, It is finished!
Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Luke 23:44-46 NLT
By this time it was about noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock.
The light from the sun was gone.
And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle.
Then Jesus shouted, Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!”
And with those words he breathed his last.
