Psalm 114 NLT
When the Israelites escaped from Egypt – when the family of Jacob left that foreign land
the land of Judah became God’s sanctuary, and Israel became his kingdom.
The Red Sea saw them coming and hurried out of their way!
The water of the Jordan River turned away.
The mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs!
What’s wrong, Red Sea, that made you hurry out of their way?
What happened, Jordan River, that you turned away?
Why, mountains, did you skip like rams?
Why, hills, like lambs?
Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob.
He turned the rock into a pool of water; yes, a spring of water flowed from solid rock.
When God gave the law at Mount Sinai, the mountain trembled in God’s presence.
Even with our great technology, the seas, rivers,
and mountains still present us with formidable challenges.
But to God, who controls nature, they are like nothing.
When observing the power of an ocean wave or the majesty of a mountain peak,
think of God’s greatness and glory, which are far more awesome than the natural wonders you can see.
To tremble at God’s presence means to recognise God’s complete power and authority
and our frailty by comparison.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they nailed him to the tree?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they laid him in the tomb?
Were you there when God raised him from the tomb?
Were you there when God raised him from the tomb?
Oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when God raised him from the tomb?
Lord Jesus Christ,
Teach me to tremble at your majesty and sacrificial love.
Remind me of the awfulness of your death,
Remind me of your awesome resurrection.
Remind me of your power when I look at your created world.
